Corliss Knapp Engle
Corliss Knapp Engle, of Chestnut Hill, died on Nov. 26, 2009. Corliss's passion for horticulture resulted in her 30 year involvement with the Garden Club of America as horticulture judge, chair, and director of numerous committees; New England Flower Show entrant and judge; served as trustee of the Massachusetts Horticulture Society; Trustee and overseer of the New England Wild Flower Society; member of the Director's Advisory Committee for the Arnold Arboretum; and member of countless plant societies.
Her contributions to the Begonia Society led to the Begonia "Corliss Engle" named in her honor. Corliss' writings and photographs have appeared in local and national publications. She wrote for, edited and designed the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts publication "Mayflower"; she researched the gardening history of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams for the journal, "White House History." Corliss was the recipient of the Garden Club of America Achievement Medal; four GCA Beattie Medals; and she was honored by the Town of Brookline, for her 30 year membership in the Tree Planting Committee.
