Please water the trees. A message from the Tree Planting Committee

In the heat of the summer, we need to be aware of the stress our street (and park) trees are under. Although the Town waters newly-planted trees for up to 3 years, there is no substitute for a nearby friend giving a thirsty tree some water. For newly-planted trees planted within the last 4 years, five gallons of water every 3-4 days through September is best. Be sure that the mulch forms a bowl around the tree to hold the water. Use either a bucket, or an open-ended garden hose running slowly. The best practice is to water infrequently, but deeply, to a depth of 6-8 inches. This will encourage a deep root system to develop. The best time to water is after dark. You should also consider the Town's watering schedule and recent rain events.
