Revitalizing the Garden at Putterham Library
Starting early in 2007, Brookline GreenSpace Alliance (BGSA), with
the Public Library of Brookline, Friends of the Library, and South
Brookline Neighborhood Association, began exploring the possibility
of rehabilitating the little garden space next to the Putterham Branch
Library. Once the space is renovated and made more inviting, this space
could fill the need for a community meeting space in the southern Brookline
area that was identified both by community members and a formal study
produced by the Park and Recreation Commission. After a small informal
kickoff meeting between the groups, BGSA asked several landscape architects
to take a look at the space and also began discussing the space with
the Division of Parks and Open Space. Currently, the Division is researching
the cost and feasibility of potential upgrades or renovations to the
space. Once that data is available, further meetings with the community
will be held to determine further action. However, there is an opportunity
to make a difference now, before the winter sets in. BGSA is working
with the Division of Parks and Open Space to host a pruning day in
the near future. The Division will provide equipment and minor supervision,
and hopefully, volunteers will provide the requisite manpower. We will
be pruning the bushes that overhang the sidewalks and also the trees
that currently blot out most of the light in the space. This will open
up the space and make it look more appealing. If you are interested
in volunteering to make your neighborhood even more inviting to live
in, please drop by. For more information, contact Edward Hsieh, BGSA
Executive Director, at 617-277-4777.
